CBE JU has released its Annual Work Programme for 2025, providing details about the upcoming call for proposals. With a budget of €172 million, this funding will support 13 topics aimed at advancing competitive and sustainable circular bio-based industries across Europe.

Members of the CBE JU Governing Board exchanged yesterday about the potential of bio-based textile fibres and the challenges of their development today in Europe. While manufactured bio-based fibres address an increasing market demand and have a high industrial application potential across different fields, the textile sector still needs to overcome several sustainability and competitiveness challenges.
On 2 October, the city of Zaragoza, Spain, marked the grand opening of the CBE JU-funded CIRCULAR BIOCARBON biorefinery. As the first facility of its kind in Europe, this cutting-edge biorefinery is revolutionising urban waste management by converting the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) and sewage sludge into high-value bio-based products. These include green graphene and bio-based fertilisers, supporting the circular economy and sustainable resource use.
The CBE JU Programme Office received 298 project proposals by the 18 September deadline for the 2024 call, requesting nearly €1.5 billion in funding. With a budget of €213 million, the evaluation will occur in October-November 2024, and results will be announced in January 2025. Proposals span 18 topics to advance circular bio-based industries in Europe.

The recently published evaluation report commissioned by the European Commission on the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) highlights the partnership’s pivotal role in advancing Europe’s green transition under the Horizon Europe framework. Completed in June 2024, the report assesses CBE JU activities since 2014 against multiple criteria, including relevance, efficiency, effectiveness, and EU-added value. The findings underscore CBE JU's significant contribution to Europe’s bio-based sector, positioning it as a cornerstone of the EU's sustainable industrial strategy.
