Summary

Europe is shifting to an economy that is making greater and more sustainable use of renewable resources. Aside from the clear environmental benefits, embracing wider use of a bioeconomy offers numerous opportunities, including increased European competitiveness, reduced reliance on imports of energy, food and raw materials and new employment opportunities.

To accelerate this transition to a circular economy, a number of Coordination and Support Actions (CSAs) have been established. These deal with areas such as standardisation, public awareness-raising, foresight and market studies, education, business model and business cases helping establish and grow the industry and boosting market uptake of the products.

Several of these CSAs are funded through the BBI JU. The role of the LIFT project is to maximise the value and impact of these CSAs by promoting collaboration between stakeholders. It will prove a global overview of the overarching objectives and make recommendations for future effective CSAs.

As well as its overall objective of boosting coordination and collaboration, the LIFT project aims to deliver on a number of objects. Specifically, it will:

  • Ensure all stakeholders are on the same page and suitably positioned to make Europe’s bio-based industry stronger and more competitive.
  • Position Europe as a leader in decoupling economic growth from resource use and environmental impact.

The overall impact of the LIFT project will be realised by building on previous and current work, thus creating a coherent and stimulating environment for a sustainable European bio-based industry. In addition, it will:

  • Map the completed and ongoing CSA projects and analyse them to provide a global overview of their results and findings. This will allow for a gap analysis of what is between the BBI JU’s objectives and what the CSAs have achieved and also which challenges remain to be addressed.
  • Increase awareness of the contribution that CSAs have made in addressing bioeconomy-related challenges and ensure that their achievements are communicated more widely.
  • Make recommendations for future CSAs for the coming Annual Work Programme.
