A global challenge: reducing fossil-based plastics
The environmental and health impacts of fossil-based plastics have become a major global concern. With over 97% of plastics still derived from fossil feedstocks, and most waste ending up in landfills or being incinerated, there is an urgent need for sustainable alternatives.
POLYMERS-5B is addressing this challenge head-on by developing bio-based and biodegradable polymers sourced from organic waste. The project is pioneering sustainable materials for industries, such as textiles, automotive, furniture, and polymeric resins, offering tangible solutions to reduce reliance on fossil-derived plastics.
Turning ideas into reality
The success of POLYMERS-5B would not have been possible without the CBE JU networking platform, which played a key role in assembling the project’s diverse consortium. This networking platform was instrumental in structuring the POLYMERS-5B project, which brought together specialists from Portugal, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Serbia, Spain, and The Netherlands, combining knowledge in biocatalysis, green chemistry, and artificial intelligence to develop high-performance, sustainable biopolymers.
A project revived by collaboration
POLYMERS-5B was initially conceived as a project focused on biodegradable and bioabsorbable polymers for medical applications. However, after initial development and participation in venture programmes, the project faced setbacks, including the impact of COVID-19, which forced it to be put on hold. With the support of the CBE JU networking platform and key partners, the project was restructured to align with a new call, leading to the formation of a strong consortium dedicated to the development of a sustainable biopolymer.
The consortium was built on the platform that was made available by CBE JU. The people go there, put in the project, and then have a meeting. So, after tons of meetings, I started to build the puzzle. By the end of June 2023, we had 13 partners who were trying to fill in all the questions and doubts that we had about the product. And with their help, we built the concept.

Through the platform, partners were able to identify complementary skills and align their objectives. This structured matchmaking process ensured that the consortium had the necessary expertise to develop bio-based monomers from agricultural by-products, such as tomato and olive waste, turning waste streams into valuable resources.
The CBE JU platform was crucial in bringing together people who had never worked with each other before. We found, through the platform, an easy online tool to focus on a common topic for potential organisations that work on the same objective. In the end, we found a way to bridge the gap regarding the know-how and the assets that are needed for a successful consorting and a successful proposal.
